‘Meth-like smell’ prompts evacuation & police search

HILLSDALE - An eight unit apartment building was evactuated early this morning after a resident reported smelling a strong meth-like odor.

Around 2:35 a.m. early Thursday morning, a resident at Hillsdale Garden Apartments called 911 and reported hearing fighting in one of the other apartments, and could smell a strong meth-like order.

Hillsdale City Police, Hillsdale City Fire Department, Reading Emergency Unit, Hillsdale County Sheriff's Department responded.

Police officers were coughing and gagging as they exited the building, which was quickly evacuated.

Reading Emergency Unit paramedics checked out a few residents and others stood in the rain, while police and firefighters inspected the entire building with the help of the apartment manager.

Around 3:40 a.m. residents were allowed back in their apartments. No meth was found. It's unknown whether the source of the odor was identified.

The incident remains under investigation by the Hillsdale City Police Department.
